The French Press or Cafetieres

Often referred to as coffee plungers, press pots or cafetieres, they offer a stronger cup because the beans stay in contact with the water for a longer time. The pot is simply a tall cylinder of glass or clear plastic housing a plunger with a wire mesh which serves to trap the grounds at the bottom of the pot after it has brewed sufficiently. Coffee beans used in a French press or cafetieres home coffee makers need to be coarse, which means using a coffee grinder.

Vacuum Home Coffee Makers

Invented by Loeff of Berlin in the 1830s, this device brews coffee using two separate chambers. Vapor pressure and a vacuum seek to provide a coffee which is cleaner, richer and smoother than that made by other home coffee makers. It may be referred to as a vac pot or siphon coffee maker. Made from metal, plastic or Pyrex, it utilizes a glass rod filter or a screen of cloth, nylon or paper. Water is heated in the lower chamber and forced through a narrow tube into an upper chamber which contains the coffee beans. When the lower chamber has emptied, the heat is turned off and the brew is drawn back into the lower chamber by vacuum where it is strained and stored.

Drip Filter Coffee Maker

Most drip filter home coffee makers utilize a paper filter which is held in a plastic basket where the finely ground beans sit. Water is poured into a container where it is heated and poured over the beans. When ready to drink, the coffee is poured into a carafe.

The brewing of the perfect cup of coffee is a matter of taste. There are so many variables involved. Consider the method of brewing, the coffee beans themselves, the degree to which they have been ground, and the time you allow to brew. My advice would be to take your time. Research home coffee makers and find what best suits your lifestyle and then experiment with different types of coffee beans and different grades of ground beans until you find the coffee brew that’s right for you.
